Chuck H. Maples, age 81, of Manitowoc, was called to eternal rest on October 11, 2012. He was born in Manitowoc on May 26, 1931, to the late Clarence Maples and Lila (Behnke) Maples. He was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, class of 1949. After high school he joined the U.S. Air Force and served from 1950 to 1953. In 1952 he was one of the first airmen to open Landstulle Air Force base, now called Ramstein Air Base.

On June 20th, 1953 he married Maria "Mika" Einkammerer of Munich, Germany. Their marriage was officiated by a judge in Ramstien, Germany and they celebrated with family and friends in a private ceremony on June 20th at Landstulle Air Base.

Chuck worked for 40 years at Crafts Electric. During his time at Crafts he worked in all of the major industries in Manitowoc and elsewhere until he retired in 1993. He was very proud of serving his country and being a veteran. He was a member of VFW Otto-Oas Post #659 of Manitowoc and Local #158 IBEW and First German Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Chuck loved life, his family and enjoyed spending time and working at his cottage retreat that he built in Florence County on Lake Emily. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, taking walks in the woods and traveling with Maria "Mika" on trips they took south and west in the wintertime.

Survivors include his wife: Maria "Mika" Maples, Manitowoc; three daughters and sons-in-law: Linda (Roland) Chaloupka, Port Washington; Claudette (Jerry) Waak, Green Bay; Sandra (Richard) Mikus, Madison; seven grandchildren: Tracy Chaloupka, Andrew Chaloupka and his fiancé: Amanda Read, Kyle and Michael Waak, Peter, Alexander and Emily Mikus; one sister-in-law: Marilyn Maples, Florida; one niece: Pam (Tim) Kaufman, Manitowoc; other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Clarence and Lila Maples; one brother: Dan Maples; and one niece: Barbara Vassilew.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 15, 2012 at the First German Ev. Lutheran Church, 1033 S. 8th St. Manitowoc. Rev. Benjamin Schaefer will officiate with burial to follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Otto-Oas VFW Post #659 of Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.
