Vesper E. Shirley, 94, Minot and Lake Metigoshe, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, in a Westhope, ND nursing home.

Vesper E. Batesole was born June 13, 1912, in New Rockford, ND, to Guy and Rosa (Laughlin) Batesole. She was raised and educated in New Rockford until her family moved to Minot, where she would graduate from Minot High School in 1930. Vesper attended college in Minot and worked as a clerk at Kresge's.

Vesper was united in marriage to Norman Shirley on January 29, 1934, in Minneapolis, MN. They made their home in Minot.

Starting in the early 1970's, they spent winters in Fountain Hills, AZ and summers in their cabin home at Lake Metigoshe. Norman died on March 24, 1988.

Vesper returned to Minot in 1988, and continued to spend time at the lake. She entered the Westhope Home in October of 1999.

She was involved in many organizations and activities while in Minot. She served as president of the Women of the Minot Country Club and the Republican Women, both of Minot. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, serving as a member of the church council and President of the First Lutheran Women. Vesper was also a member of the Cultural Affairs Committee for the Minot Chamber of Commerce and was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America. She enjoyed needlework, and gave most of her work away to friends and caretakers. She loved spending time at the lake, and with her family. She will be deeply missed by those who shared in her life.

She is survived by: son: William "Skip" (Charlo) Shirley, Fargo; daughter: Mary (Tom) Issendorf, Newburg, ND; grandchildren: Debra (Glenn Lyden) Shirley, Chris (Paul) Brendemuhl, Steven W. Shirley, and Libby Issendorf; great-granddaughter: Shelby; sister: LaVerne Bunney, Everett, WA; brother: Dale (Joy) Batesole, Garden Grove, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vesper was preceded in death by her parents; son, Steven; sisters, Evelyn Besselievre and Lucille Galin; and brothers, Guy and Ralph Batesole.

Funeral: Friday, June 30, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in Pioneer Chapel of Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday, June 29, 2006, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home of Minot.
