Composer and lyricist
Born in Schnait im Remstal (nowadays Weinstadt), Germany. He was a German composer and music teacher, who is well known for his German songs. He was a typical lyricist of the Romantic period. He also composed motets, chamber music and two overtures for orchestra. He is regarded as one of the most important protagonists of choir singing and arranged many German and international music for choir which even today are part of the base repertoire of choirs in Germany/Switzerland and Autria and which are integral part of daily life in Germany. At 17 he became teaching assistant at Schorndorf. At 20 he moved to Ludwigsburg where he took an apprenticeship at the Ludwigsburger Mädchenschule. There he met Carl Maria von Weber and Conradin Kreutzer who recommended him to dedicate his life to music. Subsequently he took piano and composition classes by Conradin Kreutzer and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. From 1817 he was first music director at the Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen. In Tübingen he founded the "Akademische Liedertafel" which he directed until his death. He was married to Luise Rosine Enßlin (*Sep. 6, 1804, †June 17, 1871, Tübingen) and they had two daughters and a son. He composed well known songs as "Alle Jahre wieder", "Am Brunnen vor dem Tore" (original by Franz Schubert but best known in Silcher's adaption), Abschied ("Muss i' denn zum Städtele hinaus") adapted to "Wooden Heart", and some 137 more songs.
Composed and Edited Folk Songs, Hymns. Wrote settings and arrangements for Home and Choir Singing. Born in Schnait im Remstal, Germany (near Stuttgart). Died in Tubingen, Germany. He founded the Akademische Liedertafel 'Unversity Singing Society' in 1829.
