He was called "Chinkapin Jim". The son of Wilson Baird (1781-1819) and Sarah (Bostick) Baird (ca1786-1871). His father died when he was very young. His mother then remarried to his uncle, John Baird. James married Caroline Hill about 1828. Middle name of Monroe cannot be confirmed.

Children were:
Wilson Baird, Elvira Jane (Baird) Couch, Sarah Jemima (Baird) Baird, Landosa M. (Baird) Fletcher, James Monroe Baird, Jr., Robert Baird, William Lycurgus Baird, Drucilla A. (Baird) Smith Lamb, Thomas Seldon Baird, Cessan Baird, Medicus Franklin Baird, Miles Baird, Daniel Gould Baird, Meredith Phillip Gentry Baird, and George W. Baird.

James and Caroline Baird were land owners in China Grove near Salem Methodist Church. Family history states that they were buried at Salem. According to the Church History as written in "Good Times, Good People, Goodluck", by Linda (Bobo) Davis, pp. 164-165, 1992, Gibson County, TN, the first church was built here in 1860. It was torn down and rebuilt in 1910. Since family history states that the church was built over the graves of James and Caroline, perhaps this happened in 1910.
