Civil War Army Officer. John H. Arey enlisted April 30th, 1861 at Newark as Ensign to serve three months, Company G, 1st Regimentof the New Jersey Volunteer Militia. In May he reported to the President at Washington, DC being part of the first Regiment to arrive for the defense of the capital. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant May 22, 1861. Discharged July 31, 1861. Reinlisted Sep. 27, 1861 as Captain of Co. G, 8th Regiment New Jersey Volunteer infantry. Resigned January 4th, l862. Again enlisted as Second Lieutenant in Company G, 13th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers on July 8th 1862 to serve for three years under Colonel Ezra A. Carman. He was promoted to captain August 22nd, 1862. He engaged in many battles (I have the dates) including Battle of South Hill, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where he was wounded by gunshot in his right arm and thigh. Then followed other battles including the Siege of Atlanta, Sandersville and Savannah. He was promoted to Major Jan 13, 1865 and honorably dischrged in Washington, DC June 8, 1865.

His first wife, Mary Ann Sanford died 28 Nov 1876. He had two children with her. Charles Joseph Sanford and Frank N. He then married Augusta March 25 Jan 1883. This union produced six more children. Lillie M., Ella G., Warren M., Kate H., Fred R. and Clarence E.

The Town of Kearny Fire Department was organized 4 Jan 1888 with John being the first Chief.

John died at Hightstown, NJ at the age of 77.
