GUYMON - J.R. Adams, 68, died Friday, Feb. 25, at Memorial Hospital in Texas County.
He was born Feb. 10, 1932, to Eva (Hinther) and William James Adams in Buffalo, Okla.
He married JoAnn Burris July 3, 1967, in Raton, N.M. She survives.
He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1950 and attended Oklahoma A & M, now Oklahoma State University.
He began his highway construction career with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and later went off to serve as supervisor for Broce Construction. In 1957 he founded J.R. Adams Inc., now Highway Contractors, Inc. of Guymon.
He was united in marriage to JoAnn Burris on July 3, 1967 in Raton, New Mexico.
Mr. Adams purchased and operated the LaMesa Park horse racing track in Raton, N.M. from 1974 to 1986. He was an enthusiastic owner of many championed racehorses and maintained interests in the oil, cattle and banking business.
He was a member of Victory Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Adams of the home; two daughters, Debbie Adams Kerl, Guymon, and Ashley Adams Whipple, and husband, Max, Guymon; four grandchildren, Jake Kerl and wife, Liz, San Antonio, Texas, Kelly Kerl, Eric Kerl and Joanna Whipple all of Guymon; one great-granddaughter, Tatum Kerl, one step-daughter, Jalonda Mason, Whiteboro, Texas; and three step-grandchildren; Shawn Mason and wife, Gloria, Guymon, Christy Warren, Hico, Texas, and Josh Baber, Whitesboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth Chapman and Kathern Cruzan; and one brother, James Adams.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Victory Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Chaffin presiding.
Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery under the direction of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.
A J.R. Adams Memorial has been established for Victory Memorial United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice. Memorials will be accepted at the church office or Henson-Novak Funeral Home, Box 1306, Guymon, OK, 73942.
