Carol Marion Ähdel, of Chesterton and Äppelbo, Sweden, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at Bäckaskog Vårdcentral, Vansbro, Sweden. She was 76.

She was born March 22, 1930 in Chicago, the daughter of Edwin and Anna Olson, both of whom preceded her in death.

On May 13, 1951 she married Lennart M. Ähdel in Äppelbo, Sweden, where he survives and currently resides.

She is also survived by two sons, Eric (Annie) Ähdel of Paris, France, and Joel C. Ähdel of Chesterton and Äppelbo, Sweden; three grandchildren, Joseph (Kathy) Ahdel of Fort Wayne, Erinn Fletcher of Portage, and Leif Ahdel of Garrett, Indiana; numerous nieces and nephews, both in the States and in Sweden; countless unofficial "grandchildren" the world over; her lifelong companion, Jean (George) Genakos of Williamsburg, Va.; and her dog and cat, Amber and Jasper.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ann-Kristine Ähdel; a sister, Virginia Hast; and a brother, Harry Olson.

Carol was a housewife, mother to her children and grandchildren, and "Grandma Carol" to 86 other children over a 23-year period of babysitting at her home in Chesterton.

She was a warm, creative, and incredibly loving individual that was completely devoted to her various roles as wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, and Good Samaritan. She loved all forms of music and art, huge gatherings of family and friends, and visits to the Dunes.

A funeral service at Äppelbo Kyrka, in Äppelbo, Sweden will be Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. (Central European Time). She will be cremated and her ashes released into the wind over the mountain that overlooks her home in Äppelbo, in accordance with her wishes.

The family has several suggestions for those wishing to honor her and celebrate her life: donate to a favorite cause, give yourself a bouquet of flowers, pamper a child, help a person in need, enjoy the beauty of the Dunes, or in some other way appropriate to you "pay it forward".
