BEVERLY — Charles H. Standley, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Virginia (Cole) Standley who died in 1989.

Born in Boston on May 9, 1923, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Gertrude (McPherson) Standley. A graduate of Beverly High School, he was a lifelong resident of Beverly. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served in Normandy during World War II and was honorably discharged as a Pharmacist's Mate in December, 1945.

Charles was employed as a shipper at the former United Shoe Machinery Corp. in Beverly for 40 years before his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Bass Haven Yacht Club in Beverly and the Herman A. Spear Post 331, American Legion. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed boating.

He is survived by two sons, Charles H. Standley, Jr. and his companion, Catherine Spanks of Gloucester, and Richard C. and his wife Cathy Standley of Essex; three grandchildren, Theresa and her husband Steven Cristoforo of Beverly, David Standley and his companion Shaela Riley of Haverhill, and Samantha Standley of Groveland; and one great-grandson, Nicolas Cristoforo of Beverly.
