Mary Ellen nee McElroy Murphy is the oldest child of Michael and Catherine (Prunty) McElroy, who emigrated from Cornanure, just outside Ballybay Town, Monaghan, Ireland. She is named after her mother Catherine's next oldest sister Mary Ellen Prunty.

She is the beloved wife of Joseph "Joe" Murphy and devout mother of Ursula Murphy Clarke of Farmingville, L.I., NY and Bernadette "Bonnie" Murphy Roettinger of Williamsburg, VA.

Her seven loving McElroy siblings are Katherine Horan (02/02/1914 - 11/24/1993), Lawrence V. McElroy (1916 - 10/09/1970), Ann Jane Cullen (formally, Anna Jeanette Cullen, commonly called Annie, named after Catherine's sister and paternal aunt, 07/09/1917 - 06/29/1962), Margaret "Margie" Lincks (09/21/1919 - 12/07/2013), Michael McElroy (d. 05/16/1922, 1 yr. old infant buried 05/19/1922), Charles Jos. "their Buddy" (03/03/1922-11/05/2010) and Virginia O'Keefe (06/12/1925 – 08/30/1982).

In addition to being a most cherished Grandmother and aunt, she has always had a unique mother like relationship with her nephew Lawrence V. Cullen (Memorial # 101656836) and him a son like relationship with her. Both memorable characters, each in their own right. For it was Aunt Mary who gave her Larry, that is, the Honorable Lawrence V. Cullen, an absolutely stunning Waterford crystal judge's gavel. They're probably chatting short witty exchanges together, smiling, and looking down on us as this is being written and as you're reading this - at whatever time that is! Listen - you may hear her clear distinct voice, a rather melodic intonation; her cheekbone smile. Appropriately, Larry achieved the Grand Knight, highest ranking, of The Knights of The Holy Sepulchre.
