"Virginia (Dimmie) Bernstein
PORTLAND -- Virginia (Dimmie) Bernstein passed away peacefully from complications associated with Alzheimer's at the Maine Medical Center on April 10, 2011, surrounded by her immediate family.
Dimmie was born in Calais on May 3, 1924, the youngest child of Roy and Estelle Jacobs.
She was predeceased by her sister, Lois Hart of South Hope, her brother, Roy A. (Buddy) Jacobs of Cotuit, Mass.; and her late husbands, Herman Neri and Norman J. Bernstein.
Dimmie attended schools in Southwest Harbor and graduated from Pemetic High School in 1942. She was a wonderful mom who supported her children's activities including sports and volunteered in a variety of civic organizations.
She will be remembered for her 'Downeast' sense of humor which reflected her heritage and for seeking adventure in everyday life. She enjoyed putting on a feast for the family on holidays and cookouts. Everyone looked forward to her homemade rolls, mustard pickles, bake stuffed lobster and special homemade salad dressing.
One of her favorite times of year was Christmas which was evident in the pride she took in decorating her home. She also had a strong interest in local and national politics and enjoyed a vigorous debate.
Dimmie was a homemaker most of her young life, but in her later years she worked at Data General until her retirement. After her retirement, she could be seen driving her John Deere tractor with her Scottie dog, Willie, sitting in her lap. You could always find her somewhere outdoors either walking Willie, gardening or just working in her yard.
Dimmie is survived by her sons, Stephen Jacobs and his wife Sunny of Fairport, N.Y., Robert Bernstein and his wife Audrey of West Buxton, Mark Bernstein and his wife Pamela of Scarborough, and daughters, Roxy Corson of Windham, and Holly Bernstein of Brunswick. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Joshua Bernstein, Kate Clark, Rebecca McCarron, Darcy Corson, Abraham Corson, and Sara Jacobs; and five great-grandchildren.
Her family would like to express a special thank you to her personal care givers who worked with her at her home at Scottow Hill and the care provided by Fallbrook Wood's staff. They would also like to thank the medical staff at the Maine Medical Center and the additional support provided by Beacon Hospice Services.
Dimmie lived her life the way she wanted, she was a strong, independent, intelligent woman whose humor and good cooking will live on in her family. To quote Philippian 4.12, PH 1 'I know how to live when things are difficult and I know how to live when things are prosperous' captures Dimmie's spirit and determination."
