Walter Max Hunke--son of Otto Hunke and Wilhelmina Henrietta Karolina ("Minna") Brauer--was born 24 September 1904 in Taylor, Williamson County, Texas. Between 1910 and 1920, Walter moved with his parents to Waco, McLennan County, Texas, according to US Census records. Walter was an automobile mechanic by trade, working for Goodhue and Smith, and later for the Automotive Repair Company.

On 21 October 1925, Walter married Corinne Henrietta Boettger--daughter of Henry Edward Boettger and Frieda Altus--in McLennan County, Texas.

Walter Hunke died 14 April 1930 in Uvalde, Uvalde County, Texas at age 25. According to his death certificate, the cause of death was an acute dilation of the heart. Walter was buried 16 April 1930 in Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.
