During John Krey's administration he attended the Commissioning of the USS Manitowoc, a tank loading ship, on January 24th, 1970, at the Naval Yards in Philadelphia. He also was proud to have ridden the bow of the Cobia as it was towed into Manitowoc. Mr. Krey is a former member of the U.S. Coast Guard. Mayor of Manitowoc, Wisconsin 1969-1973

John L. Krey, age 81, of 920 North 6th Street, Manitowoc, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center.

John was born on June 29, 1931, in Two Rivers, son of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Rocque) Krey. He was a 1949 graduate of Two Rivers Washington High School. John served the state of Wisconsin as a member of the National Guard 132nd AAA Battery 32nd Division from 1950 to 1957. John started his career with the Red Bank in Two Rivers and followed that with Thorpe Finance in different locations throughout the state of Wisconsin moving to Manitowoc in 1964 and becoming manager of Rock Finance. He started up Integrity Budget Services. In April of 1969, he became mayor of the City of Manitowoc, serving two terms until 1973. In 1973, he joined Pleuss Realty Company for 10 years followed by owning the Krey Insurance Agency for 8 years and in 1990 joining the Wojta Insurance Agency until his retirement in May of 2001. John served the area as a notary public for 30 years. On April 29, 1978, he was married to Joan M. Schaus at St. John's United Church of Christ in Manitowoc. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, St. John's Choir, lay reader, stewardship committee, budget committee, memorial and trust committee, and served as president of the church council. He was a 42-year member of the Manitowoc Noon Optimist Club, serving as president twice, former Lt. Governor of Zone 5 and was on the bingo committee for 25 years. He was a 40-year member of Eagles Aerie #706 of Manitowoc and served as trustee and treasurer for 14 years. He was member of Lakeshore Dartball League and served as treasurer and secretary, former president of the Holy Name Dartball League, and the NRA. John enjoyed spending time with Joan at Moon Beach Church Camp in the fall of the year, golfing, dartball, calling bingo for the Optimist Club twice a month and especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife: Joan Krey, Manitowoc; one son: Michael Krey, Two Rivers; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Kathryn (Peter) Nassios, Green Bay; Karen Krey, Green Bay; Susan (Todd) Draheim, Manitowoc; stepchildren include: Susanna (Gerard) Kane, Manitowoc; Greg (Julie) Schaus. Manitowoc; Ann (Dr. Chris) Hansen, Manitowoc; Sandra (Steve) Hoyt, Minneapolis, MN; Joe (Vicky) Schaus, Suamico; five grandchildren: Tara (John) Schmude; Justin Krey; Emigh (Scott) Cannaday; Alexandra Nassios; Jacquelyn Nassios; two great grandchildren: Addison and Emerson Schmude; ten step grandchildren: Karl (Trisha) Schaus; Kara (Eric) Zehren; Katie Schaus; Alex Hansen; Greta Hansen; Drew Hoyt; Phillip Schaus; Sam Schaus; Olivia Schaus; Frank Schaus; three step-great grandchildren: Colton and Cayden Zehren; Joseph Schaus; one brother and two sisters-in-law: Jerome (Kathy) Krey, Green Acres, WA; Mary Krey, Milwaukee; two sisters: Doris Vanne, San Diego CA; Jean Ferron, Green Bay; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Marilyn (Tom) Gulseth, Oconomowoc; Janet (Bill) Wydick, Manitowoc; special daughter-in-law: Peggy Krey, Manitowoc; mother of his children: Mary Ann Radandt, Green Bay. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Elizabeth Krey; one infant daughter: Heidi Krey; one brother: Richard Krey; one sister: Beatrice Krey; one brother-in-law: Ed Vanne.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at St. John United Church of Christ, 1501 Marshall Street, Manitowoc. Rev. Dr. Jim Klein will officiate. The funeral service will be preceded by an Eagles service. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc at a later date. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Krey family.
