Rosie was born March 22, 1926, in Divide County, N.D., to Nina (Kurrell) and James Leroy Westover. Rosie was the second eldest of five sisters. The family moved to Montana in 1931 and finally settled in Clancy. Rosie attended Jefferson County High School until the family moved to Seattle in 1942 to be involved in the war effort. She attended high school in Seattle until she decided she wanted to join the war effort along with her mother, father and older sister. The four of them became known as the "Welding Westovers," which was used by the shipyards as a recruitment tool for the war effort. The family returned to Clancy in 1945.
Rosie married Paul E. Sweeney on Dec. 12, 1946. She worked at a variety of jobs in the Helena area until she became employed at the Veterans Administration in 1951 as a statistical clerk.
Rosie loved the outdoors and did a lot of camping and fishing with her husband during her younger years. She retired from the Veterans Administration in 1981.
Rosie had a longtime disability which restricted her activities during her later years; however, it did not restrict her generous heart. She contributed generously to many charities, especially those involving children.
Rosie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul in 1976; her father, James Westover in 1971 and her mother, Nina Westover in 1989.
She is survived by her four sisters, Lorna Cox of Helena; Merry Johnson of Clancy; Marjorie Sweat of Hayden Lake, Idaho; and JoAnne Kessler, of Helena, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing hours will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at Retz Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at Canyon Ferry Road Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Forestvale Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to a charity of their choice, preferably ones involving children.
