Bert Abel was born in Michigan in 1884 and lived there until 1899 when he came to North Dakota and worked around the community. A laborer in 1900 in Leonard for Cathel Ross, a widow. He was 16 years at the time. On Dec. 12, 1912, he married Amanda Ganz of Swanville, MN. They moved to Leonard in the spring of 1913 and were located on the Palson farm southeast of Leonard. Here he lived for 9 years after which he farmed 2 years for Dr. Huntley. In 1924, they moved to Beaulin, MN. A year ago they were employed at the restaurant in Wheatland and only stayed there a short time as Mr. Abel's health was failing. They moved to Shevelin, MN on a small farm. Here Mr. Abel's condition became very poor and it was necessary to be under a doctor's care, and later taken to St. John's hospital at Fargo for a few days and as no help could be given what-so-ever they came to Leonard, having rented two rooms at the Mrs. Seelig home, where Mr. Abel suffered with cancer of the stomach and passed on Friday afternoon, July 16, 1926. He was the oldest of this family and one brother and parents died several years ago. He leaves to mourn his wife and four children, Lillian age 11, Bernice age 9, Clayton, age 4 and Clifton age 2, one sister, Mrs. Arthur Milllan, of Millien, MN. and five brothers: Grover, of Beaulieu, MN, Ed of Shevelin, MN, Perry of Jamestown, ND, William of Minisino, Man. Can., and Claude of Red Wood Falls, MN.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon at the High School auditorium and the remains taken to the Leonard Cemetery.
