Raymond Lankford, age 88, of Springdale, Arkansas died Monday, February 1, 2010.
He was born on October 24, 1921, in Springdale, and married Martha Frances Reder on June 18, 1946, both satisfied customers of the late Reverend Dr. John Asbell, who performed the marriage ceremony.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was gravely wounded on Iwo Jima. He loved working in the garden, particularly in his roses; reading; watching birds from the kitchen window; and fishing with special friends. The greatest joys of his life came from his family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha Frances Lankford of the home; three children, Karen Smith and husband, Charles, of Springdale; Kathryn Birkhead of Springdale; and Michael Lankford and wife, Gwen, of Pine Bluff; eight grandsons, Allen and Chris Smith; Kelly and Josh Sullivan; Bryan and Jonathan Lankford; and Nathan and Colin Birkhead; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by their beloved daughter, Frances Elise Sullivan; his two brothers and one sister.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 5, 2010 at Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Rick Grace of Spring Creek Fellowship Church in Springdale officiating.
