Nellie Lou Kagy was the seventh born into a family of 12 children. She learned early on in her life how to contribute to the daily routine of chores which at times involved cooking. She learned a lot of her cooking skills from watching and helping her mother in the kitchen. She loved talking about the times that was spent eating on the long kitchen table was full with siblings and laughter. She loved spending time with her family so much that you were always greeted in to her home with a home cooked meal and sweet conversation. Nellie had the most sweetest and forgiving spirit. She became a professional cook and worked at numerous cafe's. The one I remember the most was The Farm Hand Cafe in Farmers ville California.
She spent most of her life rising early 3:30 am each day so she could start making her special dishes and loved to demonstrate that daily to her regular customers. Many would travel for miles to taste her wonderful simple home made cooking, and most importantly her home made pies. So many of customers loved her cooking and her sweet disposition that they would go back to the kitchen and express their thanks with a big hug.

As the author of this tribute I might add that on the day of my wedding my husband's grandfather was seen hugging Aunt Nellie (He did not know that she was my Aunt). He explained that he would drive out of his way to eat lunch where she worked because he loved her cooking so much and was so excited to see her.

Nellie was a quiet simple person who was shy and had a unassuming nature. She was one of those who stood back and watched. She had an affectionate laugh and she was the one your could confide to when troubles arouse with no judgment.

She was the one that did all the planning for the Kagy family reunions that encompassed up to 100 relatives. She would always provide her home made bread and her famous "Cinnamon Rolls" and Chile Verde. She loved watching so many enjoy her labor of love.
Nellie married John Butterfield and was married for 28 years until his passing in 1993. They had no children.

Nellie suffered from Diabetes in her latter years and eventually that disease took her eye sight and eventually her life. Nellie passed in her sleep peacefully.

Nellie was my Aunt and I want all to know what a remarkable woman she was. Her instruction and wisdom will never be forgotten. We love you Auntie!
