Anna E. Barns was born in Clarksfield, Huron county, Ohio, April 18, 1838. Her grandfather was the third settler in that vicinity, moving from Connecticut. When she was 16 years old, the family moved to Iowa, coming by wagon, and settled near Iowa City. She taught one of the first schools ever established in that locality, at the manificent salary of $11 per month and boarding around. Mrs. J. Mad Williams of Des Moines, one of the trustees of Drake University, was one of her pupils at that time.
In 1857 she was married to David Higbee. During most of her married life she resided in Iowa at Iowa Ciy, Grinnell, Avoca, Osceola and Des Moines. Two years ago Mr. Higbee died and since that time Mrs. Higbee has been making her home with her oldest daughter, Mrs. W.E. Reeves of Kansas City. There were three other children; Frank Higbee, Edward Higbee, both deceased, and Miss Nellie Higbee of Kansas City.
