Marna E. Howery, age 91 of Darlington, died on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 at Monroe Clinic Hospital in Monroe with her family at her side. She was born on June 26, 1921 in Mineral Point to Willard "Stub" & Anna (Perry) Noble. Marna graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1939. She attended University of Wisconsin - Madison and graduated from National College of Education in Evanston, Ill. She taught kindergarten in Sheboygan and also taught at Badger Munitions in Baraboo during the war.

On Dec. 16, 1944, she married G.M. "Cinnamon" Howery at First Methodist Church in Mineral Point. He preceded her in death on June 28, 2011. Marna was a Navy wife, and she and Cinnamon lived in various places throughout the United States. Cinnamon finished his service in the United States Navy in 1945, they spent some time in Elizabeth, Ill., and they eventually moved back to Cinnamon's hometown of Darlington where he ran the Lafayette County News and Howery Printing. Marna taught kindergarten in Darlington for 29 years.

Her family was her first priority, and she loved spending time with them and cooking for them. After her retirement, she volunteered at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County. Since Cinnamon's death, she has resided at Aster Retirement Community in Monroe. Marna was a member of Darlington United Methodist Church and of its Ladies Aide. She was also a member of American Legion Post #214 Auxiliary, of Lafayette County Homemakers, and of her local Bridge Club. Cinnamon and Marna spent many days with their friends at Darlington Country Club.

She was a patient person, loved children, and very much enjoyed her years teaching kindergarten and loved getting to know all the children in town.

She is survived by her four children: Cheri (Bob) Wesenberg of Monroe, Paula Carlson of Amery, Mark (Janet) Howery of DeForest and Mike Howery of Grafton; four grandchildren: Leslie (Wil) Wesenberg, Brock (Jackie) Wesenberg, Katie (Chris) Howery and Anna Howery; three great-granddaughters, Olivia Thompson, Landry and Abrynn Smith; a sister-in-law, Garnett (Ed) Howery Graf of Bella Vista, Ark.; other relatives, former students, and many friends.

Marna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, David Carlson; a sister, Ruth Ann (Herman) Miller; a brother-in-law, Vic Howery; and a sister-in-law, Betha (Whitey) Fromader.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at Darlington United Methodist Church, 546 Main Street (Park Place), with Rev. Larry Hakes officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Internment will be at Union Grove Cemetery. Visitation and time of gathering will be from 1:30 - 2:50 p.m. before the service on Sunday at the church.
