Anthony F. Abatiell, 73, of Rutland passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2013, at Mountain View Center with his family at his side.
He was born in Rutland on Oct. 26, 1939, the son of James S. and Helvi (Hella) Abatiell.
Anthony was educated in Rutland schools, Brown University, Boston University and Boston College School of Law, with a Juris Doctor degree.
Anthony was a practicing Attorney at Law in the law offices of Abatiell & Abatiell, Abatiell & Wysolmerski, Abatiell & Valerio and Abatiell & Associates, currently located in the building he built in memory of his dad.
He was a member of the Vermont Bar Association, American Bar Association and past President and Treasurer of American Trial Lawyers Association. He was a former Chairman of the House of Delegates and past member of the Finance Committee for Kiwanis International. He was past President and served on the Board of Directors of Rutland Region Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus, 4th degree, Rutland Kiwanis Club, Lt. Governor of Kiwanis International and Vice Chairman of Vermont Financial Services, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vermont National Bank. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Rutland Industrial Development Corporation and Southern Vermont Industrial Development Council.
Anthony was a former Chairman of the Board of Directors as well as a Trustee of the College of Saint Joseph and on the Editorial Board of Vermont Catholic Press Association. He had also served as Treasurer of the Lake Bomoseen Association.
Tony enjoyed watching and participating in his children's endeavors: their hockey, sailing, skiing, dancing, horse shows, soccer, swim teams, hunting, and restoring and showing his 1957 MGA, traveling, and wonderful trips in his Winnebago with the Joe Giancolas and the Dick Heberts.
Tony had many adventures with family and friends, including organizing sailing vacations in Tortola, BVI. He was an avid and renowned sailor with accomplishments including holding local and national titles and became a Commodore in the British Virgin Islands. In his youth, he was a swim instructor at Lake Bomoseen and a ski instructor at Pico Mountain.
Some of Tony's most precious moments were spending decades of fun at the family camp on Lake Bomoseen, which he helped his dad build when he was 7 years old and which his children and grandchildren will enjoy for generations to come. He especially enjoyed the time he had with his beautiful grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra (Mapes) Abatiell of Rutland; a son, Ethan Abatiell, and his wife Wendy of Castleton; three daughters, Audra Abatiell Fairbanks and her husband Leo of Rutland, Helvi Abatiell of Mendon, and Deana Abatiell Tommola and her husband Scott of Rutland; a brother, James S. Abatiell Jr. of Rutland; and nine grandchildren: Tiffany, Kayla, Dean, Emme, Abraham, Oskar, Dessa, Angelina and Sophia.
He was predeceased by his parents and nephews, Eino and Aaron Abatiell.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Justin Baker, Pastor.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
