John Jacob Bowman was born in 1749 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of Jacob Johannes Bowman (1722-1778) and Elizabeth Rueger Bowman (1720-1781). John Jacob was the great grandson of Rev. Hans H. Herr who was one of the pioneer settlers of Lancaster, PA from Switzerland.

John married Elizabeth Keller (1748-1806) on Nov. 25, 1767 at Frederick Co., Maryland, USA in 1767. She was the daughter of Hans George Keller (1711-1782) and Barbara Ann Hottel Keller (1712-1785). Her dad had come to America from Germany, and her maternal grandfather was Johannes John Hottel. Johannes was born in Switzerland. His wife was born in Germany. Johannes came to Pennsylvania in 1732 and brought Elizabeth's mother and other family members to America with him. This family settled in Tom's Brook, Shenandoah County, VA. There are books written about this family as there are books about Rev. Hans Herr. The book titles for the Hottel and Keller family are "History of the Descendants of John Hottell"; "A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia" and "Namen von Einwanderern in Pennsylvanien aus Deutschland, der Schweiz, Holland, Frankreich u. a.
