Nell and her husband, L.D., were married immediately following her graduation on the stage at Holly Pond High School. Nell and L.D. moved to Birmingham, where Nell attended Birmingham Business School. On April 29, 1963, Nell accepted a position as a clothes buyer/sales associate in the commissary at American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO). She worked for ACIPCO until she retired January 1991. Nell became a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church and participated in the Madison County Senior Center. Nell's love of life and people was contagious.
