Gail was born March 28, 1962, in Wharton, to the late Murris Noel and Beatrice Schneider Cryer. Gail grew up in North Austin. Gail's love for animals took her to Texas A&M, where she achieved her bachelor of science degree in zoology in 1984. She later studied veterinary medicine at the University of California at Davis, receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1996. Gail practiced in Sunol, CA, from 1996 until 2001 when she returned to Texas to establish her small and large animal practice.

She provided professional and caring veterinary services to thousands of patients in Milam, Bell, and Williamson Counties over the years and gave great advice and support to the patient's owners. Gail often said, "Work is my passion. I especially enjoy horses, cows, and dogs." Her love for animals was also evidenced by her personal ownership of many dogs, cats, horses and a turkey.

In November 2000, Gail married Rodney V. Appling. They met in Sunol when Rod had one of his favorite dogs stitched up by Gail. They shared a common interest in horses and dogs. Rod supported Gail in her practice and understood the many long hours of work that represented her passion. He gave the gift of selfless dedication and love during her 12-year battle with breast cancer. Gail loved to read, attend Broadway plays, and travel with her sisters
