Obadiah served in the 50th Iowa Inf. Co. K in the Spanish American War with his brother, David Alonzo Barnes. The Unit did not deploy from the United States. The unit had to build it's own training camp in the swamps in Florida. Within several months of being in Florida, 50% of the troops were either in sick bay or had been sent back to Iowa. The Iowa Governor and his AG went to Florida and in several months they were sent back to Camp Dodge in Des Moines and mustered out. His brother David eventually died from the fever and TB he contracted in Florida.
