Michael Neff volunteered his service for the defense of VA at Wytheville, and was three years a member in active service in the 63 VA Inf., Co., "H", as a Sargent. His Rgt. fought in Reynold's brigade, Stephenson's Division, Buckner's Corps, and was in the battles of Stone River, Chickamaunga, Resaca, Atlanta, Zions Church, Jonesboro, and many others. He was in Johnston's Army in North Carolina at the time of surrender. He had 4 brothers in the army.

Lived in Wythe Co., VA, Rural Retreat all his life; in 1912 he gave his age as 80 and had belonged to the 63 VA Reg. Co. "H". Entered service May 1862 at Wytheville VA in the county of Wythe.

Affidavit:
1. After the 29 of August 1864, I was in all the hard service in the State of GA.
2. Just before the surrender I was in the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina. The 20th of March 1865 under General Joe Johnson not far from Bentonville is where I received my Parole. I don't remember the name of the place, I was in the service of the war during the surrender.

War Department 27 April 1913
The records show that Michael Neff, sergeant, Company H, 63d Virginia Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted May 15, 1862. On the roll of the company dated August 29, 1864. Last on file, he is reported present. No later record of him has been found.
