            George T. Bell, Merchant, Dies

Was Active Many Years in Business, Fraternal and Church Circles

    George T. Bell of 113 North Franklin street, active in local curch circles for many years and a widely known produce merchant, died on Saturday evening at 8:30 in General hospital of complications after a short illness. Mr. Bell had enjoyed good health until last week when he was stricken ill.
    Mr. Bell was born in Vira, near Lewistown, Juniata county on July 2, 1860. His parents were among the early residents of that community. Mr. Bell received his early education in the schools of that place. He later attended Williamsport seminary and upon graduation taught school a number of years. Mr. Bell later went to Pittsburgh and later to Johnstown. At Johnstown he and Miss Margaret Byers were married and shortly afterward they came to this city in 1887.
    Upon coming to this city Mr. Bell entered the produce business with an establishment on North Main street. Mr. Bell operated a prosperous produce business for many years. It became one of the best known in this part of the State and expanded rapidly.
    In addition to the George T. Bell establishment in Wilkes-Barre, which is managed by his two sons, Fearon B. and Vincent G. Bell, there is a branch in Scranton managed by George, Jr., and one in Dryden, N. Y.
    Since his youth Mr. Bell had devoted considerable time to church activities. He was on of the most prominent church leaders in Wyoming valley. Deceased was an active member of First M. E. church and was president of the board of trustees of the church. Mr. Bell also was class leader of First M. E. church and was a member of the official board. He also taught Sunday school for many years.
    Mr. Bell possessed many splendid traits of character which won the admiration of a host of friends. His loss will be keenly felt by scores of such workers and business men who held him in high esteem. Deceased was affiliated with Landmark lodge 442 F. & A. M.
    Surviving are his wife and the following children: Fearon B. Bell, Vincent G. Bell, George T. Bell, Jr., all of this city, and Mrs. Howard L. Williams, Scranton; also the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Jennie A. Beashore, West Pittston; Mrs. Matilda Berkeimer, Mrs. George S. Hines, Lewistown; Rev. J. Ellis Bell, retired of York, and seven grandchildren.
    The funeral will be held from First M. E. church, North Franklin street, on Tuesday afternoon at 2. Rev. Dr. L. K. Willman will officiate. Interment will be in Hollenback cemetery. Friends may view the remains at First M. E. church on Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 2.
