HYDE PARK - Wayne Conant Allen, 78, died peacefully Jan. 17, 2013, in Copley Hospital in Morrisville.
He was born April 16, 1934, at the "old" Copley Hospital, son of the late Lillian (Hooper) and Clifton Allen.
Wayne played basketball and sang in the barbershop quartet at Johnson High School. He joined the Air Force where he served in Washington state, Saudi Arabia and on Cape Cod. He was a salesman and demonstrator for Ingersoll Rand. Drillers from as far away as Norway and Australia came to learn from him, and he spent a summer sharing his knowledge in Brazil. Wayne liked to work with his hands and became a carpenter and a leatherworker after he moved back to Vermont. His love of people and driving found an outlet in his last job as a school bus driver. He married Betty Farrand in 1956 and they raised two daughters. In his later years, he stayed close to his mother and looked after her, allowing her to stay in her home until she was 95. Wayne was a devoted member and volunteer with the Hyde Park VFW, serving at one time as lay chaplain. Wayne also once served as a commander of the Johnson American Legion and was proud to be a charter member of the Newport Eagles Club. Wayne took pride in his work and found pleasure in playtime with friends and family. He danced and sang with gusto to country music and strongly identified with Willie Nelson. Wayne was always up for a back road ride and cheering on the New England Patriots. He enjoyed Louis L'Amour novels and western movies on TV. Those who best knew Wayne will remember his easy laugh and the twinkle in his blue eyes. They'll remember his sociable and helpful nature. He was a jokester and flirt with a very playful spirit, and laughed as loudly at himself as he did the rest of us.
Wayne is survived by his two daughters, Michelle and husband, Richard Lawson, of Gorham, Maine, and Tawny Allen of Hinesburg; two granddaughters, Laura Reed and Donna Porter; eight greatgrandchildren; and one great-great grandson. His two sisters, Wanda Morton and Brenda Cannon; and Betty Allen, his former wife and lifelong friend, all reside in Florida; and his step- mother, Yvonne Nye, lives in Johnson.
Visiting hour is 10 to 11 a.m., directly followed by the funeral service, on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at des Groseilliers Funeral Home, Main Street, Johnson.
