A Life Remembered ~ John Graham Bell

 

The following information was contributed by Carole Elizabeth Nurmi Cummings, a Dutch descendant from the 1600s, his 2nd great niece.


When John Graham Bell was born on 12 July 1812, in Sparkill, Rockland, New York, United States, his father, Johannes "John" William Bell, was 33 and his mother, Hannah Graham, was 24.


He married Ann J. Briggs on 1 January 1865, in Upper Nyack, Rockland, New York, United States.


He was a naturalist and taxidermist. He was well versed in his field and was a noted scientiest.


He lived in Orangetown, Rockland, New York, United States most of his life in his birth home in Sparkill.


He died on 22 October 1889, in Sparkill, Rockland, New York, United States, at the age of 77, and was buried in Tappan Cemetery, Tappan, Orangetown, Rockland, New York, United States.


JOHN G BELL'S DEATH


John G. Bell, the famous taxidermist, and one of Rockland's most honored citizens, is dead. Mr. Bell passed away Tuesday, at his home in Sparkill, after a brief illness, death being caused by a complication of diseases.


He ranked at the head of his profession and specimens of his work may be found in every prominent collection in the country. The government often enlisted his services as a scientist and his loss will be felt by the Museum of Natural History, in Now York city.


Mr. Bell had a host of friends, He was a warm supporter of the Journal for many years past. Mr. Bell had entered his 78th year. Funeral services will be held at Mr. Bell's late residence on Friday, at 1:30 p. m., after which the remains will be interred in Tappan Cemetery.


The Reformed Church, of Tappan, loses a valued member and a consistent christian; the community an honored member, and scientific circles a devoted co-worker.
