John L. "Pops" Balka, 84, of Freehold Township died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at his daughter's Freehold Township home.

Visiting will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center St., Freehold, on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Chapel, Freehold, on Tuesday at 10 a.m., followed by interment at Cloverleaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge.

Born in Carteret, Mr. Balka resided there and in Woodbridge before moving to Freehold Township 10 years ago.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Balka was a lead man for GATX, Carteret, where he was employed for 46 years before retiring in 1985.

He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, Freehold, and was an avid supporter of the Christian Brothers lacrosse and soccer teams.

His wife, Ann Orosz Balka, died in 1997.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Dr. John Sensakovic of Lincroft, and Bette Jane and Henry Lubas of Freehold Township; a brother, Louis Balka of Forked River; a sister, Helen Bauer of Mays Landing; four grandchildren, Sonia Marie Sensakovic, Michele Taylor and Justin and Jonathan Lubas, and two great-grand-children, Lauren and J.T.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Michael's Medical Center Cancer Center, 111 Central Ave., Newark, N.J. 07102

Born in Carteret, he had resided there and in Woodbridge before moving to Freehold Township 10 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1985, he was a lead man for GATX Terminals Corp., Carteret, where he was employed for 46 years.

Mr. Balka was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Freehold. He was also an avid supporter of the lacrosse and soccer teams of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft section of Middletown.

He was predeceased in 1997 by his wife, Ann Orosz Balka.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Dr. John Sensakovic of Lincroft, and Bette Jane and Henry Lubas of Freehold Township; a brother, Louis Balka of Forked River; a sister, Helen Bauer of Mays Landing; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Chapel, Freehold, followed by interment at Cloverleaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
