The death year on the headstone does not agree with court records. Major's claim to fame was that he was a major retailer of bourbon whiskey in the mid-1800s. His grandfather John Sr. fought in the Revolutionary war, and received a land-grant on the waters of Beech Fork and Cedar Creek in Nelson County. His father John Jr. fought in the Indian wars specifically at Fallentimber's in Northern Ohio. His father was also justice of peace for Cartwright Creek community.

Major Burnett married Mary Johnson in Washington County, Kentucky in 1831. William Weatherly was the surety for their marriage bond dated November 19, 1831. This record is filed in Marriage Book #2 on page 310.

Major and Mary E. (Johnston) Burnett were the parents of, at least: Mary Elizabeth Burnett, 1833-xxxx; Sarah Ellen "Nellie" (Burnett) Filiatreau, 1838-1919; Julia Ann (Burnett) Berry, 1838-1899, moved to Flaherty, KY; Joseph Thomas Burnett, 1841-1862, a Confederate soldier, killed at the Battle of Perryville, in neighboring Boyle County, Kentucky; James W. Burnett, 1843-xxxx; Emily Kate (Burnett) McIntire Blandford, 1846-xxxx; Thomas C. Burnett, 1849-xxxx; John W. Burnett, 1851-xxxx; Mary Josephine Lucy Pauline (Burnett) Blincoe, 1854-xxxx; Henry Orie Burnett, 1858-xxx; and CCharles Wardlow Burnett, 1860-1923.

Major Burnett converted to the Roman Catholic religion and was baptized at St. Rose Church, near Springfield, Kentucky on September 15, 1881. His baptism is recorded in St. Rose Sacramental Register #III on page 821.
