He was educated at the Pluckemin School and then the Green Knoll School for the 8th grade after his family moved from Bedminster Township to Bridgewater Township. He finished in 1931. He did well in school and was scheduled to attend Somerville High School. However, he was seriously injured in a car accident and spent many months in a hospital. He did not attend high school, but appears to have completed a course in Electricity at the Coyne Electrical School in Chicago in 1934. He later worked at his father's garage.
As a teenager he "robbed" the cash register at his father's garage and went to California on a motorcycle. There had been a substantial settlement in compensation for his injuries in the car accident and he felt that he was owed the money. As an old man, he still felt justified in this. He later reconciled with his family.
Having grown up working at his father's garage in NJ, he worked first as a mechanic and then as a taxi driver. He was 4F during WWII because he badly damaged his leg in the car accident and later had a motorcycle accident in California.
He owned Bell TV Service and Capitol Hill TV Service for many years having recognized early the importance of television. He was trained at the National Radio Institute of Washington, DC, receiving a diploma in 1952.
Two daughters, one step-son.
