Janet Sherrard Boardman, died peacefully, January 22, 2013 at the age of 92 after a long illness.
Janet Elizabeth Sherrard was the daughter of Robert Andrew Sherrard and Mary Davies Keene. She was born March 16, 1920 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Her parents died at an early age and Janet and her infant sister, Nancy were cared for and raised in Chambersberg, Pennsylvania by a maiden aunt, May Campbell Sherrard and paternal grandmother, Mary Campbell Sherrard. She attended Chambersberg schools and graduated from Wilson College in Chambersburg in 1942. During WWII she worked for the war effort as a Mail and Records Manager for Letterkenny Ordnance Depot General Supply Division.
She saved her money and following the war enrolled at Drexel College (now University) in Philadelphia where she graduated in Library Science. She worked as a Fine Arts Reference Librarian at Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland. There in the summer of 1952 she met a handsome army major, Charles H. Boardman. Janet and Charles fell in love and were married in Baltimore on November 15, 1954. She was able to accompany him as he made his career in the U.S. Army with tours at Edgewood Arsenal, MD, Fort Knox, Kentucky, Fort Benning, Georgia, and one of the highlights of her life, three years in Poitiers , France.
Following the Army career, the family moved to Cocoa Beach where Charles worked in the Space Program. While her husband was working for GE and Pan Am, Janet was busy raising their two children, Charles IV and Nancy. Through Charles' employment with Pan Am, she and Charles made many interesting overseas trips: Yucatan (Mexico), Western Europe, Soviet Russia (twice), New Zealand, Israel, Jordan, India, Japan, and three trips to China. She and her husband made many travel talks at the Cocoa Beach Library. Janet was the Publicity Chair for the Friends of the Cocoa Beach Library for many years.
Janet, being born and raised as a Presbyterian, joined the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Cocoa Beach with Charles in 1966. She was active with women's circle work and was a circle leader for 13 years. She also enjoyed singing with the church choir for over 40 years.
Janet loved fine art, fine music and fine food. She also loved to talk. She painted for many years.
Janet is survived by her sister, Nancy Daubanton of New Rochelle, NY; her loving husband of 58 years, Charles Boardman III LTC (Ret.); her son, Charles H. Boardman IV LTC (Ret) USAF and his wife Elizabeth of Lake City, FL; her daughter, Nancy and her husband Albert Bleakley, JR. Col. (Ret) US Army of Cocoa, FL; her stepdaughters, Christine Barnes of Madiera Beach, FL and Paula Gaspar of Defiance, Ohio. She was always very proud of her grandchildren: Charles H. Boardman V, Sarah Samson, Ruth Bleakley and Martha Brookley.
