Charity Maria "Maria" DAYTON was born 8 September, 1810 in NY (probably Ontario Co.) to David Dayton and Mary FRANCISCO (later Mrs. John FIRES). Maria married John Weatherwax, son of Andrew and Alida "Olive" (VAN DER COOK) Weatherwax, on 3 November, 1831 in New York.

As far as we have thus far been able to determine, John and Maria had three children. Their eldest was a daughter, Mary Jane Weatherwax, born 17 September, 1834 at Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., NY. Their second child was Henry Weatherwax, born circa 1836, about whom little is known. The youngest known child of this family was Andrew Jefferson Weatherwax, born in 1837 in New York.

John and Maria emigrated to St. Joseph Co., MI when their children were quite young. Life on the frontier was hard and many settlers died of disease. John Weatherwax died 12 September, 1844 at the age of 37. Maria followed him on 4 October, 1848 at the age of 38. Daughter Mary Jane remained in Michigan for at least two more years, as she was enumerated in the 1850 census working as a domestic in the residence of the Norman family in Florence Twp. She eventually returned to Ontario Co., NY where she became the third wife of Levi GIFFORD on 1 February, 1855. Sons John and Andrew can be found in the 1850 census working as farm laborers for Dalton of Lagrange Co., IN. Andrew J. Weatherwax, a Civil War veteran, married Lucy Ann ELLIS in 1864. They raised four children of their own and adopted a fifth.

John Weatherwax is also buried in Morrison Cemetery. Their daughter, Mary Jane Weatherwax Gifford, is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua, Ontario Co., NY. Andrew J. Weatherwax lies buried in the White Pigeon Twp. Cemetery. [
