Ted Junior Heiner, 79, passed away quietly at home in Bedford on Monday Jan. 28, 2013 due to incidents related to advanced age.
Ted was born May 9, 1933 in Bedford to Theodore Mortiz Heiner and Margaret Rickenbach. He was the oldest child in the family. His siblings were LaRee, Bob, Carolyn and Kim.
He attended the Bedford school, which housed grades one through eight. He attended Star Valley High School, where he graduated in 1951. While in school, he noticed Janeene Gardner, daughter of Milford and Alda Gardner, while on a music festival trip. They dated and were later married in 1954 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Ted attended BYU in Provo, where he excelled in his studies of math, chemistry, physics and geology. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and went on to complete an additional five years of study. He also received a Master of Education degree.
While in college he joined the ROTC and later served in the Air Force, being stationed among other places in the Azores, where he was a supply officers and later a communications officer.
He was an excellent marksman and was the Captain of BYU's shooting team, winning eight first place trophies in the Utah State Gallery Shooting Championship and was the overall shooting champion. He was noted for his fine shooting and killed his share of elk on many elk hunts.
He loved to fish and would always fish with a pistol on his hip. When his fishing fly snagged a tree, he would shoot the twig holding the fly to free it. He seldom returned from fishing without his limit.
Ted moved to Bedford to run the family dairy farm after his father passed away in 1965. The children learned to run the farm with Ted, learning how to operate tractors, brand cattle, milk cows and put up hay.
Ted's day started at 4:30 a.m. when milking began, then he cleaned up and went to school before coming home to milk in the evening. He did this until all the children were out of the home and then the milk cows were sold and beef cattle were purchased.
Ted taught school for 33 years. He was an excellent teacher of physics, math and science. He believed in doing his own discipline and used a paddle in his classroom and had very few problems with unruly students.
Ted and Janeene had eight children; Jae, Val, Tedi Jeen, Mel, Nolan, Sheri, Bart and Eldee. All of his children graduated from Star Valley High School. His six sons served missions for the LDS Church and all of his children were married in LDS Temples.
Janeene passed away in 1983, due to diabetes. Ted and Janeene had been married for 29 years. Ted then met Marilyn Titensor Skinner, and they were also married for 29 years.
Marilyn and Ted lived on the farm in Bedford, where Ted stayed active right up until his passing. He was a weather observer for the National Weather Service where he collected daily temperatures and moisture and sent it in each month for over 30 years. He recently received an award for his many years of service.
Ted and Marilyn have a total of 17 children, 91 grandchildren and 107 great grandchildren. He was beloved by all of his posterity. He grew very close to all of them.
Ted was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Bedford LDS Ward. He served in many different callings throughout his life. He also served in stake assignments. He very much enjoyed serving as stake clerk to President Marlow Bateman and enjoyed hearing the counsel given from visiting general authorities.
He was a noted singer and had a rich bass voice. He sang for many funerals and church meetings as well as with his family at home. He loved music and taught himself to play the piano after retiring from teaching school.
He will be remembered as a person who exemplified the saying "fix it up, wear it out, make it do or do without". He was a good neighbor to all.
The day before he died, a fish dinner was served at his home for members of his family living in the valley. He was in good spirits and laughing at his grandchildren.
His funeral was held in the Bedford LDS Ward Chapel on Feb 2, 2013 and he was interred in the Bedford Cemetery.
He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 29 years, all of his siblings and his children.
