Archiel V. "Archie" Fiems, 56, one of Moline High School's legendary football heroes, died Monday in Tucson, Arizona, after open heart surgery.
Services will be 9:30 am, Thursday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Tucson, with burial in Tucson Memorial Gardens. The Palms Mortuary, Tucson, is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Fiems, who moved to Tucson in 1968 resided at 4611 W. Montecito, Tucson.
Mr. Fiems was a halfback and became noted for returning punts on two of moline's most outstanding football teams, 1935,when the Maroons were 7-1 and in 1936 when the team compiled a 9-0 record.
Among teamates of those grid teams were Cliff Peterson, Jim and Alphonse "Flip" Anders, Ed Lindley, Carl Hamilton and Stowell Masengarb.
Mr. Fiems returned a punt for a touchdown in Moline's 33-7 Thanksgiving Day victory over East Moline in 1936. His brother, Joe, played for East Moline and "Archie" played for the Maroons, residence rules not being strict in those days.
Mr. Fiems was born in Moline. He married Lois Roeh June 28, 1947, in Moline.
He was employed at Duval Sieritta Copper Mine. He was formerly employed by Rock Island Lines, Silvis Shops, for 15 years as a machinist.
He was a life member of St. Mary's Church, Moline, and a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are the widow; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Fiems who resided with him in Tucson; six daughters, Mrs. Michael Torrison of Tucson, and Kathryn, Christine, Victoria, Deborah and Rebecca, all at home. Seven sons, Daniel, John and Steven all of Moline, David of Colona and James, Robert and Mark, all at home; seven grandchildren, and two brothers, Joseph of Port Byron, and Frank of Tucson, He was preceded in death by his father.
