He moved to Miami, Florida in 1950 where he attended Miami Tech High and studied aviation mechanics. Then he joined the Naval Air Force and was very excited to be stationed in Hawai'i. While in boot camp he was picked for the Blue Jackets Choir, the Navy's elite choir. They performed on the Ed Sullivan Show and at Carnegie Hall which was the thrill of his life. After the service he worked selling life insurance and cars. He also worked for the Post Office and ran Liberty Bowling Lanes. His dream job was at Bell South selling yellow page ads. He worked there from 1970-1996. He was the number one top seller in 1993. After a brief retirement he worked for Medi-Trans taking patients to their doctor appointments from 1997-2000. Then in 2001 he and his wife Doris moved to Ocala. He was a driver for Meals on Wheels from 2004-2008.
He fought stage 4 colon cancer for 11 years. As he was fighting cancer he was always joking and upbeat. He never let it keep him from living his life to the fullest. Music and his family were his true loves. He could play the piano and organ by ear and had a beautiful voice. He was a sharp shooter with a rifle, good at pool, golf, racquetball and ping pong. His favorite was bowling and he bowled four "300" games. He also played amateur Jai Alai.
He was a big romantic who wrote many beautiful poems. He was kind, sweet, and very generous and loved by all who knew him. He traveled to many casinos across the United States and was known by many as "Johnny Slots". He loved to gamble and he had numerous Royal Flushes. He lived a very full and adventurous life.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, February 4th at 12 p.m. at Bread of Life Church, located at 2000 NE 78th St., Ocala, FL 34479.
