Jerry R. Mantey, 79, whose curious and compassionate nature made him much renowned at the Lambertville pharmacy he founded and ran, died Sunday at St. Luke's Hospital.

Mr. Mantey died of respiratory failure after a fall at home, family members said.

Born and raised in Toledo, Mr. Mantey graduated from Whitmer High School in 1944. In 1950, during the Korean War, he joined the Army and served as a pharmacy technician both in Germany and Korea. He was wounded by shrapnel in Korea.

Mr. Mantey returned home in 1953 and enrolled in Toledo University, now the University of Toledo, and received a degree in pharmacy four years later.

He partnered with Herb Eiserman at Wernert Pharmacy in Toledo for eight years before breaking off to start his own pharmacy in 1969 at Secor and Summerfield roads.

He called the store S&S Pharmacy, for "service and satisfaction, he liked to say," his son Craig said. "He put in 70-hour weeks for years and years."

From the start, Mr. Mantey was known for his desire to get to know everyone who came in - and his capacity to ignore the bottom line when compassion suited him better.

"A lot of times, people he'd never even seen before came in, saying they didn't have any money. He'd say, 'Ah, don't worry about it.' A lot of 'em came back and became good customers," his son said.

Mr. Mantey stayed on at the pharmacy until 2002. With a business to run, he didn't travel much outside the area, but he enjoyed taking day trips throughout the region.

Mr. Mantey was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Lambertville.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; three sons, Michael Donovan, Craig Mantey, and Kent Mantey; sister, Marjorie Williams, and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the H.H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home, and tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, followed by services at the church at 11 a.
