MARIA SOLIZ
Maria Jesus "Jessie" Leyva Soliz, a former business owner, died Tuesday at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. She was 75.
Born June 19, 1925, in El Rey, Arizona, she lived in Monterey County for the past 59 years.
In 1941, Mrs. Soliz married her husband, Miguel, who owned a shoe repair shop in Seaside. They operated the business together until Mr. Soliz' death in 1965, and Mrs. Soliz, an experienced cobbler, continued running the business with the help of her son, Frank, until 1986. She was known as "The Lady Cobbler of the Monterey Peninsula."
Mrs. Soliz was deeply involved in the community. She was active in the Seaside Chamber of Commerce, the Wiskerinos, the Diabetes Association, the Human Race, and numerous community events.
She is survived by four sons, Miguel Soliz III of Chula Vista, Frank Soliz of Seaside, Steve Soliz of Monterey and Gregory T. Soliz of Wheatland; six daughters, Virginia Stillwell of San Jose, Pat Crook of Turner, Oregon, Connie Bowling of Dalhart, Texas, Anita Goldman of Carmel Highlands, Rebecca Soliz-Fuller of Pacific Grove and Felicia Roina of Elk Grove; her mother, Dominga Espinoza Lujan of San Jose; three brothers, Frank Leyva of Sonoma and David and Richard Leyva, both of San Jose; a sister, Connie Karnes of San Leandro; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Church, Seaside. Burial will follow at Mission Memorial Park, Seaside.
Family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard, Alexandria, Virginia.
