Varena was born in 1956 to Joe John, Jr. and Mildred Adams, in Wildwood, GA. She was born with severe spinal bifida, and hydrocephalus. Varena spent all of her short life in a chaise lounge or a bed. I remember her as one of the most loving, intelligent, and playful persons I ever knew. She was always happy, and smiled a lot, in spite of her disability. She was my playmate, my teacher, and I loved her very much. Her death in 1970 devasted me deeply, since I was only 6. She taught me how to write (which is why I write left-handed, and do everything else right-handed). She really was God's special angel, and I still miss her today.
