Richard was a resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, and was a retired insurance company executive. He was an avid supporter of his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Victors Club. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marine. He founded insurance firm, Olympia Agencies in the Olympia Building, in downtown Detroit, in the 1960s. In the 1970s, he then went on to help found the Financial Guardian Company in Troy. He and his partners sold the company in 1995. "He was a very humorous man and a great story teller," said his son Edward." He was an outdoorsman and member of various clubs including the Huron Mountain Club, the Saint Clair Flats Shooting Club and the Detroit Racquet Club. He served on the Detroit Zoological Society board of directors for more than 30 years. He died from complications of pneumonia at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Emily; four sons, Richard Jr., Arthur, Scott and Edward; and seven grandchildren.
