"John W. Marrs was born Aug. 21, 1862, in the Mission Creek area. The family moved to what is known as the Jimroe Johnson place, two miles west of Harveyville, when John was six months old. They lived there until he was 16 years old when his mother, Harriet, died and was buried in the Harveyville Cemetery in 1876 [actually 1878]. The family soon scattered and John kept track of only one, an older brother, Dave. Only scattered reports were received of the others. John never knew when any of his sisters, brothers, or his father died, except Dave. Dave lived in Southwest Missouri and was married and had a family. The family moved to the Grey's Harbor area in Washington state. John and Dave corresponded at long intervals.

John went to Joplin, Mo. and worked in the lead mines, later returning to Wabaunsee near Harveyville and took up farming. He made his home in the Jim Sisson and Izak Harris places, both west of town in Plumb Township. He was married to Mary Zabriskie in 1891 and set up housekeeping on the Old Sand Hill 80 southwest of Harveyville in Plumb Township. He lived on several places and finally purchased his "Marrs home" from Jim Lee in 1908. It was located between Harveyville and Bradford. His wife, Mary, was the daughter of Rev. J. H. Zabriskie and Agnes Zabriskie. He was pastor of M. E. Church at Harveyville. He built the first part of the present church and also the church that was at Bradford.

John W. Marrs, the father, served for two terms as County Commissioner (1912-1920), and two terms as Representative in the State Legislature (1921-1923). He died in 1944 and is buried in the Harveyville Cemetery. His wife, Mary, died at the age of 98, and is buried in the Harveyville Cemetery."
