In 1838 he was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. After graduation in 1842 he saw service in Florida, Louisiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Texas. He graduated as a Second Lieut., 1st Infantry, July 1, 1842. Later served: on frontier duty at Ft. Atkinson, Io., 1842 43; in garrison at Ft. Marion, Fla., 1843 44; on frontier duty at Ft. Snelling, Min., (Second Lieut., 8th Infantry, July 1, 1843), (Transferred to 1st Infantry, July 8, 1844)
1844 46; on Recruiting service, 1846 48; on frontier duty at Ft. Snelling, Min., 1848; in transferring Winnebago Indians, 1848; Died, Apr. 11, 1849, near Victoria, Tex.: Aged 29
His remains were moved to this plot in Oakwood by his daughter.

The inscription on his grave marker was written by his second wife Lucille.
