Mary Elizabeth Weatherwax Plummer Quay Smith was born in Constantine Township on 3 May, 1844, the third child of Henry VanDerCook Weatherwax and his first wife, Mary Etta WING.

On 3 March, 1864, Mary married 1. David F. PLUMMER. David, a Private in Co. K, 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, was mustered immediately after their marriage. He died at Little Rock, Arkansas of camp fever on 12 August, 1864 and lies buried in the Little Rock National Cemetery. David and Mary's only child, daughter Nellie Frances Plummer, was born 28 November, 1864.

On 6 November, 1866, Mary married 2. Myron QUAY. On 25 December, 1873, they had a son, Arthur J. Quay, who died in childhood. (According to Mary's great-great grandson, Arthur is buried at his mother's feet but with no marker.) This marriage ultimately ended in divorce.

In 1882, Mary married 3. Chauncey J. SMITH. He died in 1921.

Mary lived her entire life in western St. Joseph and eastern Cass counties.

Mrs. Mary E. Smith Succumbs After Long Illness

Mrs. Mary E. Smith passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Curtiss in Newburg yesterday afternoon following
illness which extended over a period of some years.

Mrs.Smith was 84 years of age last May 3, having been born in Constantine township May 3, 1844. Her parents were Henry (V.) D. C. and Mary Ella Weatherwax.

She married David F. Plummer, a veteran of the Civil war, who passed away in 1864. In 1882, she married C. J. Smith who died in 1921. Mrs. Smith lived all her life in the vicinity of her present home. She was surrounded by a large circle of friends by whom she was highly regarded although during the past few years, she was unable to mingle with them because of failing health.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Curtis, with whom she lived, a granddaughter, Mrs. J.A. Mays, Dearborn and three (great) grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from the home Saturday forenoon at 10:30, Rev. Leonard Norton officiating. Burial at Sand Hill Cemetery.
