Mr. E. Lee Hauser, 93, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007, in his home.
Mr. Hauser was born in Winston-Salem on Oct. 1, 1913, and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduation, Mr. Hauser worked for the N.C. Department of Social Services in several counties. In 1937, Lee was appointed director of social services for Cumberland County and served in this capacity for 38 years until his retirement. Hauser was a Mason and served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Hauser was elected to two terms as president of the N.C. Directors of Social Services. In 1973, Lee was recognized as the State of N.C. Social Services Director of the Year. Mr. Hauser served on the board of directors of the Cumberland County Blind Association, the Better Health Foundation of the United Fund, Cumberland County Youth Commission and the Boys' Club of America. Lee was a member of the Cumberland County Mental Health Center Advisory Board and was chairman of the Physicians' Advisory Committee. For his proven record of extraordinary service to the state of North Carolina, Lee has been honored on two occasions with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine — first by Gov. Holshouser and again by Gov. Hunt.
Mr. Hauser joined the Rotary Club in 1938. Throughout his years of service, Lee has served as secretary, treasurer and club president, as a member of the board of directors and various committees, and as a member of the District Conference Committee. Lee served as Rotary district governor in 1968-69.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, June 23, 2007, at Cross Creek Cemetery No. 3. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Hay Street United Methodist Church with Dr. John H. Tyson and the Rev. Edwin Needham officiating. The visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2007, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Nicholson Hauser; sons, Lee W. Hauser and wife Nancy of Elizabethtown, and Samuel F. Hauser and wife Rebecca of Fayetteville; granddaughters, Anne Marie Winefordner of Cary, Laura Pugh of Raleigh and Sarah Hill of Fayetteville; two grandsons, Lee Wilson Hauser Jr. of Atlanta and Samuel Franklin Hauser Jr. of Charlotte; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Hauser was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Comer of Dobson.
