Vern was an infantry and machine gunner and rifleman. He enlisted in the Army in December, 1941. He received training at Ft. Lewis Washington, and several camps in California. He was sent overseas to Fiji on 11 June 1942, and entered combat on 5 July 1943. Vern was killed 23 February 1944, while in active duty for his country on the Bougainville Island, North Solomons, Papua New Guinea.

Vern's actual burial is 05/02/1979
