Evelyn Ione Ahrens, 96, of Martinsburg, passed away at 7:55 P.M., Monday, February 4, 2013 at Golden Living Center/Gamma Road Lodge in Wellsville.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 P.M., with a Prayer Service at 7:30 P.M., Thursday, February 7th at the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, February 8th at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg. Father Greg Oligschlaeger will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, south of Martinsburg.
Mrs. Ahrens was born March 14, 1916, in Wellsville, Missouri, a daughter of John Bartholemew and Anna Grace Hampton Whitehead.
She was a 1934 graduate of Wellsville High School.
On November 6, 1934, in Martinsburg, Mis-souri, she married Joseph Liborius Ahrens. They were the parents of five children and were happily married for almost 55 years. They raised their family in rural Martinsburg from 1934 until he preceded her in death on March 20, 1989. Ione continued to live at the farm until her health declined and she moved to the nursing home in September of 2011.
Family was what made Ione's home complete. Every Christmas and Easter, family gatherings were held at her house. A small woman in stature had a mighty heart of love for her children and grandchildren. There was never a time you would go to her house that she didn't have sweets to share. All of the grandchildren loved going to grandma's to get her famous sugar cookies.
Ione loved to bake. Some of her best baking was her angel food cakes, divinity nut roll and butterscotch pies. She made numerous wedding cakes throughout the years. Her love of baking took her to St. Louis for the Pillsberry Bake Off where she won 2nd place for her angel food cake. Numerous ribbons at county fairs and the state fair were won for her baking. Ione also loved to garden, taking pride in her roses. She also had the talent for arranging flowers.
She was a faithful and dedicated member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg, where she was a member of the Ladies Sodality. Ione had also been a member of the Martinsburg Extension Club.
Survivors omitted.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Lib-orius Ahrens; son, Charles Leonard Ahrens; sister, Irene Ann Renick and brothers, George William Whitehead and John Duard Whitehead.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice c/o Myers Funeral Home, 203 East Bates Street, Wellsville, MO 63384.
