"Ex-Resident Dies in Fall - D Barker Drops for 7 Floors - A 24-year-old ex-Titusville man was killed Wednesday when he fell seven stories down an elevator shaft in Long Beach, CA, according to relatives in Titusville. David Barker, 24, was working on top of the elevator when an apparent misstep sent him plunging seven stories to the floor of the shaft. Two other men were working below Mr Barker, according to the report, but one man climbed to safety. The other reportedly fell with Mr Barker, and had his legs crushed. The two men were unidentified. Mr Barker had been working for a construction company for some time, but had returned to his job earlier this week after having been laid off for a time. Mr Barker was born in Titusville on Dec 14, 1940, the son of Mr and Mrs Merle Barker, now of California. He is the father of five children. Mr Barker's wife is the former Margaret Mills of Oil City. He is survived by his wife and children; his parents; a sister, Mrs Betty Schmid; and four brothers, Richard, John and Jerry, all of California, and Bill of Erie. Mr Barker has several surviving aunts and uncles: Mrs John L Myers of New Orleans; Mrs Lillian Barker, Mrs Mabel Latchaw, Mrs Maude Blitz and Mrs Ethel Kinney, all of Titusville. He has one uncle, Robert L Barker, also of Titusville. The residence of another uncle, Albert Barker, is not known by the family. Another aunt, Mrs Betty Patterson, resides in Erie. Although funeral arrangements are incomplete, that family has announced that Mr Barker will be buried in California."
