At 17 Joseph enlisted in Company K of the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He saw action along the Mississippi River and was in Mobile when the Union captured it from the Confederates. Part of the time he was the bugler of the regiment.

Though a native of Ohio, soon after the war he removed to Kansas, where on 21 June 1871 he was united in marriage with Elizabeth "Lizzie" Shoemaker.

They would have a family of five, raise them in Lawrence, Kansas where Joseph was involved in the music industry. He also tuned pianos and other things related with music.

His wife, after her children were raised went to college to get a law degree. She would pursue this career, along with being very involved with women's sufferage.

Joseph had always, since a child been interested in the law himself and decided he also wanted a law degree, left Lawrence and went to Boulder, Colorado at age 61 and he did obtain the degree he sought.

His health had deteriorated some and arthritis was bothering me. These problems he thought brought on by the years in the war.

In 1910, he along with his two daughters, Miriam and Ruth took out a substancial homestead in the hills behind The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon. The three of them worked very hard clearing out trees and boulders to improve their land. Each of them had their own cabin. Joseph would remain here until his death. His ashes would be scattered on the Sheldon Ridge Ranch, that he had come to love and call home.
