Victim of Attack Dies From Shock

An elderly, crippled woman who was the victim of an attack Saturday night by a youth described as sallow-faced and about 15, died Tuesday on her way to Providence hospital, the coroner’s office reported.

Deputy Coroner Myron Costley said death “probably was due to emotional shock” from her experience.

The woman, Mrs. Hattie Davidson, 65, a widow who lived at 1825 S. E. 52d avenue, suffered a bruised shoulder and a sprained wrist when she attempted to fight off her youthful attacker Saturday, she reported to police.

Early Tuesday she complained of feeling ill. A physician examined her and found nothing wrong except an irregular heart. About noon the physician was summoned again, and this time he ordered her sent to the hospital. She was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy will be held, the coroner said.

Mrs. Davidson, who had a wooden leg and used crutches, told police the youth rang her doorbell Saturday night, and when she answered the attacker struck her. When she screamed, the youth fled on foot.

The screams failed to attract neighbors immediately because they had been listening to a radio thriller and thought the noise part of the program, police reported. When police arrived, Mrs. Davidson appeared to be in a state of shock from her experience.

Immediately after her death the case was referred to the homicide detail for investigation.
