SMITHSBURG - IVAN G ALGER, 77, of Route 3, died Saturday at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W Va.

Born in Rileyville, Va, he was the son of the late Jacob V and Fannie B McInturff Alger. His wife, Rachel M Poffenberger, died in 1972.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He worked as a carpenter, and also was employed by the Washington County Board of Education from which he retired in 1975. He was a member of the Ringgold Church of Christ.

He was a member of the Ruritan Club of Ringgold, Medairy Lodge 140 AF & AM, Masonic Temple in Williamsport, Gourgas Lodge of Perfection, Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, Syrian Temple, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Hagerstown Forest 95, and Carpenters Local Union 333 of New Kensington, Pa.

He is survived by two daughters, Janette V Moore, New Kensington, Pa; and Cynthia A Herbst, Cumberland, Md; three sisters, Reta Tabler, Martinsburg; Xenia Hillard, Charles Town, W Va; and Estelline Fox, Luray, Va; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 am Tuesday at the Ringgold Church of Christ, with the Rev Paul J Bowles and the Rev Sterling C Keeney officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport, with full military honors conducted by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.
