Funeral services for Oscar A. Freemyer, for the last 22 years president of the Peterson & Packer Coal Co., who died suddenly late yesterday of a heart attack will be held Saturday. … Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. … His rise in the business world is a story of a self-made man. He was born in Dorloo, Town of Rosebone, Schoharie County, Feb. 6, 1867, so of the late John and Catharine Allen Freemyer. When but 14 years of age he began his business career, going to Hoosick Falls to become a clerk in a grocery store there.

Taking advantage of leisure time, he made the then tedious journey to Troy frequently enough to take a commercial course at Troy Business College. About 1886 he came to Troy, entering the employ of the old firm of Starkweather and Allen as a bookkeeper.

From that point, his advancement was speedy. On June 1, 1890 he began work for Peterson & Packer, also as a bookkeeper. When the Peterson & Packer Coal Co. was organized in 1899 he was elected secretary and assistant treasurer of the firm. In 1908, upon the death of Samuel A. Peterson, he was elected vice president and treasurer and in 1916, on the death of I. H. Williamson, he was elected president, an office he held until his death.

He is survived by an adopted daughter, Miss Irene A Freemyer, and two brothers, Manly J. Freemyer of Troy and Emmett W. Freemyer of Brooklyn. Mrs. Freemyer died several years ago.
